WHAT IS KARATE
Karate literally means “empty hand”. It is a fighting method which uses body parts as weapons. In the classes you will learn how to block, strike and kick effectively but most of all Karate is great training for both body and mind and an effective way to develop a strong character.
FIRST STEPS
To enquire about vacancies you need to send a email through the mailing form displayed on the training menu of our website. We tend to have specific periods for students intake, but that might change according to the places currently available. The club reserves the right to accept or reject any applications.
WHAT TO BRING
The only thing you will need to start practicing Karate is some loose clothing and free mind. You can wear trousers (no shorts), and ideally a white t-shirt. Be prepared to train with bare feet, toe and finger nails must be suitably short. Long hair must be tight on the back. No jewellery allowed, piercings that can not come out must be covered with tape. You can bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated. If you join the club you will become a member of JKA (Japan Karate Association) . This will provide you with insurance and enable you to progress to grade in the belt-system. At a later stage we can also provide you with a Gi, the white karate suit.
WHAT TO EXPECT
When you first start training you will join in with the class, learning the basics of Karate. You won’t be expected to know anything because a lot of karate is taught by being shown and watching what others do. You don’t have to be fit to start with as the training will develop your fitness, stamina, co- ordination and strength.
